    Stochastic weighted particle methods for population balance equations

    A class of stochastic algorithms for the numerical treatment of population balance equations is introduced. The algorithms are based on systems of weighted particles, in which coagulation events are modelled by a weight transfer that keeps the number of computational particles constant. The weighting mechanisms are designed in such a way that physical processes changing individual particles (such as growth, or other surface reactions) can be conveniently treated by the algorithms. Numerical experiments are performed for complex laminar premixed flame systems. Two members of the class of stochastic weighted particle methods are compared to each other and to a direct simulation algorithm. One weighted algorithm is shown to be consistently better than the other with respect to the statistical noise generated. Finally, run times to achieve fixed error tolerances for a real flame system are measured and the better weighted algorithm is found to be up to three times faster than the direct simulation algorithm

    A Preliminary Discussion of the Kinematics of BHB and RR Lyrae Stars near the North Galactic Pole

    The radial velocity dispersion of 67 RR Lyrae variable and blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars that are more than 4 kpc above the galactic plane at the North Galactic Pole is 110 km/sec and shows no trend with Z (the height above the galactic plane). Nine stars with Z < 4 kpc show a smaller velocity dispersion (40 +/-9 km/sec) as is to be expected if they mostly belong to a population with a flatter distribution. Both RR Lyrae stars and BHB stars show evidence of stream motion; the most significant is in fields RR2 and RR3 where 24 stars in the range 4.0 < Z < 11.0 kpc have a mean radial velocity of -59 +/- 16 km/sec. Three halo stars in field RR 2 appear to be part of a moving group with a common radial velocity of -90 km/sec. The streaming phenomenon therefore occurs over a range of spatial scales. The BHB and RR Lyrae stars in our sample both have a similar range of metallicity (-1.2 < [Fe/H] < -2.2). Proper motions of BHB stars in fields SA 57 (NGP) and the Anticenter field (RR 7) (both of which lie close to the meridional plane of the Galaxy) show that the stars that have Z 4 kpc have a Galactic V motion that is < -200 km/sec and which is characteristic of the halo.     Chemical Abundances For Evolved Stars In M5: Lithium Through Thorium

    We present analysis of high-resolution spectra of a sample of stars in the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904). The sample includes stars from the red giant branch (RGB; seven stars), the red horizontal branch (two stars), and the asymptotic giant branch (AGB; eight stars), with effective temperatures ranging from 4000 K to 6100 K. Spectra were obtained with the HIRES spectrometer on the Keck I telescope, with a wavelength coverage from 3700 angstrom to 7950 angstrom for the HB and AGB sample, and 5300 angstrom to 7600 angstrom for the majority of the RGB sample. We find offsets of some abundance ratios between the AGB and the RGB branches. However, these discrepancies appear to be due to analysis effects, and indicate that caution must be exerted when directly comparing abundance ratios between different evolutionary branches. We find the expected signatures of pollution from material enriched in the products of the hot hydrogen burning cycles such as the CNO, Ne-Na, and Mg-Al cycles, but no significant differences within these signatures among the three stellar evolutionary branches especially when considering the analysis offsets. We are also able to measure an assortment of neutron-capture element abundances, from Sr to Th, in the cluster. We find that the neutron-capture signature for all stars is the same, and shows a predominately r-process origin. However, we also see evidence of a small but consistent extra s-process signature that is not tied to the light-element variations, pointing to a pre-enrichment of this material in the protocluster gas.National Science Foundation AST-0802292NSF AST-0406988, AST-0607770, AST-0607482DFGW.     Active Control of Fan Noise-Feasibility Study

    A study has been completed to examine the potential reduction of aircraft flyover noise by the method of active noise control (ANC). It is assumed that the ANC system will be designed such that it cancels discrete tones radiating from the engine fan inlet or fan exhaust duct. Thus, without considering the engineering details of the ANC system design, tone levels are arbitrarily removed from the engine component noise spectrum and the flyover noise EPNL levels are compared with and without the presence of tones. The study was conducted for a range of engine cycles, corresponding to fan pressure ratios from 1.3 to 1.75. The major conclusions that can be drawn are that, for a fan pressure ratio of 1.75, ANC of tones gives about the same suppression as acoustic treatment without ANC, and for a fan pressure ratio of 1.45, ANC appears to offer less effectiveness than passive treatment. Additionally, ANC appears to be more effective at sideline and cutback conditions than at approach. Overall EPNL suppressions due to tone removal range from about 1 to 3 dB at takeoff engine speeds and from 1 to 5 db at approach speeds. Studies of economic impact of the installation of an ANC system for the four engine cases indicate increases of DOC ranging from 1 to 2 percent, favoring the lower fan pressure ratio engines. Further study is needed to confirm the results by examining additional engine data, particularly at low fan pressure ratios, and studying the details of the current results to obtain a more complete understanding. Further studies should also include determining the effects of combining passive and active treatment

    Regulation of human renal adenocarcinoma cell growth by retinoic acid and its interactions with epidermal growth factor. Retinoic acid (RA) is a natural derivative of vitamin A which regulates the growth and differentiation of epithelia. We have previously proposed that RA participates in compensatory kidney growth and reported that RA inhibits rat mesangial cell growth. This paper describes the effects of RA on a human renal adenocarcinoma cell line (PAD) under different growth conditions, and its interactions with epidermal growth factor (EGF). PAD cells were shown to express RA receptors α and ÎČ by Northern blot analysis. In serum free cultures, addition of RA (10-7 M) markedly increased thymidine incorporation by PAD cells (155 ± 7% mean ± se vs. control in 6 separate experiments; P < 0.0001). RA also caused a significant increase in thymidine incorporation by PAD cells under conditions of rapid growth in serum supplemented medium (115 ± 2% vs. control; P < 0.001). RA by itself was unable to reverse contact inhibition of PAD cell growth (NS vs. control), but it synergistically enhanced the mitogenic effect of EGF on confluent monolayers (110 ± 0.6% vs. EGF alone; P < 0.05). Northern blot analysis demonstrated that PAD cells express EGF receptor mRNA, and this was not significantly modified by the addition of RA. Growth arrested (serum starved) PAD cells expressed RAR-α mRNA which was up-regulated eightfold at three hours following the addition of 10% FCS. Thus, our data show that RA is directly mitogenic for serum starved human renal adenocarcinoma cells and that it exerts complex modulation of cell growth in the presence of EGF and serum components

    Predictions for the X-ray circumgalactic medium of edge-on discs and spheroids

    We investigate how the X-ray circumgalactic medium (CGM) of present-day galaxies depends on galaxy morphology and azimuthal angle using mock observations generated from the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. By creating mock stacks of {\it eROSITA}-observed galaxies oriented to be edge-on, we make several observationally-testable predictions for galaxies in the stellar mass range M⋆=1010.7−11.2  M_\star=10^{10.7-11.2}\;M⊙_{\odot}. The soft X-ray CGM of disc galaxies is between 60 and 100\% brighter along the semi-major axis compared to the semi-minor axis, between 10-30 kpc. This azimuthal dependence is a consequence of the hot (T>106T>10^6 K) CGM being non-spherical: specifically it is flattened along the minor axis such that denser and more luminous gas resides in the disc plane and co-rotates with the galaxy. Outflows enrich and heat the CGM preferentially perpendicular to the disc, but we do not find an observationally-detectable signature along the semi-minor axis. Spheroidal galaxies have hotter CGMs than disc galaxies related to spheroids residing at higher halos masses, which may be measurable through hardness ratios spanning the 0.2−1.50.2-1.5 keV band. While spheroids appear to have brighter CGMs than discs for the selected fixed M⋆M_\star bin, this owes to spheroids having higher stellar and halo masses within that M⋆M_\star bin, and obscures the fact that both simulated populations have similar total CGM luminosities at the exact same M⋆M_\star. Discs have brighter emission inside 20 kpc and more steeply declining profiles with radius than spheroids. We predict that the {\it eROSITA} 4-year all-sky survey should detect many of the signatures we predict here, although targeted follow-up observations of highly inclined nearby discs after the survey may be necessary to observe some of our azimuthally-dependent predictions.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table.     The impact of direct-to-consumer personal genomic testing on perceived risk of breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancer: findings from the PGen study

    Abstract Background Direct access to genomic information has the potential to transform cancer risk counseling. We measured the impact of direct-to-consumer genomic risk information on changes to perceived risk (ΔPR) of breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancer among personal genomic testing (PGT) customers. We hypothesized that ΔPR would reflect directionality of risk estimates, attenuate with time, and be modified by participant characteristics. Methods Pathway Genomics and 23andMe customers were surveyed prior to receiving PGT results, and 2 weeks and 6 months post-results. For each cancer, PR was measured on a 5-point ordinal scale from “much lower than average” to “much higher than average.” PGT results, based on genotyping of common genetic variants, were dichotomized as elevated or average risk. The relationship between risk estimate and ΔPR was evaluated with linear regression; generalized estimating equations modeled this relationship over time. Results With the exception of lung cancer (for which ΔPR was positive regardless of result), elevated risk results were significantly associated with positive ΔPR, and average risk results with negative ΔPR (e.g., prostate cancer, 2 weeks: least squares-adjusted ΔPR = 0.77 for elevated risk versus −0.21 for average risk; p-valuedifference < 0.0001) among 1154 participants. Large changes were rare: for each cancer, <4 % of participants overall reported a ΔPR of ±3 or more units. Effect modification by age, cancer family history, and baseline interest was observed for breast, colorectal, and lung cancer, respectively. A pattern of decreasing impact on ΔPR over time was consistently observed, but this trend was significant only in the case of colorectal cancer. Conclusions We have quantified the effect on consumer risk perception of returning genetic-based cancer risk information directly to consumers without clinician mediation. Provided via PGT, this information has a measurable but modest effect on perceived cancer risk, and one that is in some cases modified by consumers’ non-genetic risk context. Our observations of modest marginal effect sizes, infrequent extreme changes in perceived risk, and a pattern of diminishing impact with time, suggest that the ability of PGT to effect changes to cancer screening and prevention behaviors may be limited by relatively small changes to perceived risk.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/114396/1/12920_2015_Article_140.pd
